Phd-student in immunopathology: the role of macrophages in neurodegeneration in MS

Job description

You will be a PhD student within the Departments of Molecular Cell Biology and Immunology and Pathology in which excellent immunological research is performed with a focus on molecular and cellular interactions and in which pathological studies are performed on human tissues.
Within your project, you will investigate how macrophages and microglia (the resident brain macrophages) are involved in neurodegeneration and neuroprotection. You will use in vitro studies to examine different ways of activating macrophages with the aim of identifying pathways involved in neurodegeneration process and pathways that might identify novel neuroprotective strategies. For this you will make use of a wide range of immunological, cell biological and histopathological techniques. Findings from the in vitro studies will be compared to human disease by examining the pathways in human tissue samples frrm people with MS. You will verify your findings using in vitro studies and animal studies where appropriate.
Besides the practical work in the lab, you are responsible for data analysis and writing research papers. You will closely collaborate with other researchers within the MS Center. A PhD thesis will be the result of your 4 years study.
